The popularity of ATVs has led to models for sport riding from the forest to the sand dunes, racing motocross or cross country and utility for farm, ranch and hunting leases. Side by side models (golf cart style) for less aggressive terrain and some have six wheels for bogs or semi-amphibious use.
An ATV rider might be tempted to have the homeowners insurance cover the unit but basic Liability and Comprehensive insurance coverage at home, farm and ranch does not extend to the transport of the ATV, on a trailer, hunting lease, race track or the forest. Liability insurance coverage is for bodily injury and property damage, to others, while on the ATV and Comprehensive insurance coverage is theft, fire, flood and vandalism for the ATV. Collision coverage pays to repair your ATV, if there is a collision between two ATVs, an ATV and an auto or an ATV and a tree, and is not available thru a homeowners policy. Also, many of the accessories will not be covered by homeowners in the event of theft, vandalism, fire or flood.
Finally, full coverage insurance, Liability, Comprehensive & Collision may be mandatory if there is a lien holder, such as a bank or credit union. Full coverage insurance policies are between $150 to $700 but Liability and Comprehensive (theft) is typically between $95 and $250 per year. Not a bad investment to insure a $7,000 unit.
