11/17/2007 Searching the Internet for Motorcycle Insurance

Your motorcycle insurance premium, is going up again! Frustrated, you go to the internet to search for better prices on motorcycle insurance. First, your favorite browser, second, your favorite search engine and third, you type in the keywords "motorcycle insurance". And the results are....

First, let’s understand the 4 types of results you will receive. 1) There are motorcycle insurance companies (also known as carriers), 2) there are motorcycle insurance lead companies and 3) there are insurance agencies 4) there are motorcycle insurance agencies. Which do you choose to save time and money.

1) Motorcycle insurance companies issue the insurance policy to you, direct thru their in-house agents. You complete their online form or call their 800 number, speak to an order taker... uh, agent and you receive, one quote from one company. If the price is acceptable buy it, if not, move on to the next motorcycle insurance company and repeat the process. Pros: 1) process is quick Pros: 2) don't have to deal with an agent. Cons: 1) process is time consuming if you have to submit to five companies. Cons: 2) there is no guarantee you have found all the motorcycle insurance companies in your state, thus there may be a better price and coverage available to you.

2) Motorcycle insurance lead companies sell your information to insurance agencies in your specific city or state. You complete the lead companies online form, your information is forwarded (typically by email or fax) to an agent and you receive one quote from a captive agent (Allstate, Farmers, State Farm) or you receive one quote from an independent agent with up to three companies (Progressive, Dairyland, Foremost). If the price is acceptable buy it, if not, move on to the next insurance lead company and repeat the process. Pros: 1) your information is sent to a greater number of agents and you may find your best price and coverage. Cons: 1) your information is being sold. 2) the independent & captive agents are too busy with the auto insurance leads to bother responding to the motorcycle insurance leads. 3) the process is time consuming if you have to submit to multiple lead companies 4) there is no guarantee they represent all the motorcycle insurance companies, in your state.

3) Insurance agencies specialize in home and auto insurance and some of the insurance companies the agency is appointed with, happen to offer  motorcycle insurance. Pros: 1) in the agency can write your motorcycle insurance with the same company you have your home and auto insurance with. Pros: 2) you have one agent for all your insurance policies. Cons: 1) the insurance company has a "convenience" policy giving the very basic full coverage insurance for your motorcycle. Cons: 2) if you have file a claim on one policy, your rates are likely to increase on the other two policies. Cons: 3) your home and auto insurance agent is not up to speed with ins and outs of a motorcycle policy.

4) Motorcycle insurance agencies specialize in motorcycle insurance and are appointed by a greater number of motorcycle insurance companies, than an auto insurance agency. A good agency is appointed by all motorcycle insurance companies, in their respective state (3 is average, 5 is good and 8 is really good). The motorcycle insurance agency will represent the motorcycle insurance companies, selling direct and those included by the lead companies. Then be certain the agency quotes with all 7 to 10 carriers and is familiar with the "specialty coverage" only a motorcycle insurance company can offer.         Pros: 1) one stop saves time and money and yields the best coverage. Cons:??
